Helen Mirren scores Golden Globes nomination for playing Cara Dutton in 1923

Succession may be leading with the most 2024 Golden Globe nominations, but the Yellowstone franchise isn’t too far behind. On Monday, Dec. 11, 2023, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees for the 81st Annual Golden Globes. 1923 star Helen Mirren was nominated for a Golden Globe, along with 1923, which was nominated for Best Television Series - Drama.

Mirren stars as Cara Dutton in 1923, and she's nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series- Drama. Mirren is up against an all-star list of nominees, including Sarah Snook from Succession, Keri Russell from The Diplomat, Imelda Staunton from The Crown, Emma Stone in The Curse, and Bella Ramsey from The Last of Us. Mirren has won three Golden Globes in her career.

Why does Helen Mirren deserve to win the Golden Globe?

Mirren’s portrayal of Cara Dutton is nothing like we've seen before in the Yellowstone and its spinoffs. Mirren takes being a badass Irish woman very seriously and crushes this role. Giving what she has brought to 1923, Mirren deserves recognition during the awards season, and it's great to see her nominated for a Golden Globe.

In the series, Mirren plays an Irish immigrant, Cara, who married Jacob Dutton and later becomes a mother figure to her nephews after the passing of James and Margaret Dutton. Cara Dutton is a tough but charming character who holds all the pieces together for the Dutton family. While she may not have children of her own, she is so much more than a mother figure to this bunch of cowboys in 1923. Mirren has delivered heartbreaking performances in this series after her character's husband was nearly shot to death right in front of her. Car also bears witness to her nephew John’s murder. Not only did she have to pick up the pieces for Jack and John’s wife, she also had to nurse her husband back to health and step in the shoes of the family business. A role that was not done by any woman of her time.

Despite the heartbreaking moments, Mirren also delivers in the heartwarming moments for Cara Dutton. She's even better when sharing scenes with Harrison Ford, who stars as Jacob Dutton in the series. They share a kind of boundless love that stands the test of time. It’s beautifully written and even more beautiful to watch on screen. Ford was not nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance as Jacob Dutton.

1923 should be back to filming season 2 shortly. With season 1 attaining so much success already, look for the following season to be just as powerful and with just as much success.
